Home Watch Storm Watch

September 14, 2021

Is it my imagination, or are we seeing more and more violent storms throughout our Northern Virginia region? Thunderstorms, flooding, hurricanes, tornados…what’s next? Experts claim that global warming is to blame. No matter what the cause, storms and weather events can create problems for your home. Especially if you’re away. That’s why you need someone on storm watch to look after your home.

As Home Watch professionals, we care for your home as you would if you were there. But since you’re away on vacation or business, and can’t be in both places at the same time, we’re the eyes and ears on the ground on your behalf.

Storm Watch Before the Weather Event

If and when a weather event happens in your neighborhood, we’re on storm watch. We’ll inspect your home prior to the storm to ensure that all windows and doors are secure, and that drainage areas are not blocked. You certainly don’t need to come home to a flooded basement or house!

We’ll take the time to prepare your home in the event of a weather emergency, by stowing outdoor planters, cushions and furnishings, and securing other items that may be blown or damaged by winds.

Storm Assessment After the Storm

After the storm, we’ll review your home both inside and out to ensure that no storm damage has occurred. We’ll look for signs of leaks or flooding, and arrange for removal of any downed debris.

If we do find storm damage on our storm watch assessment, like roof damage, we’ll notify you immediately. We can even arrange for repairs and monitor the progress on your behalf.

How to Prepare Your House for Heavy Wind and Rain

  • Clear out gutters and downspouts so water can flow freely
  • Repair damaged gutters and downspouts
  • Clear leaves and brush
  • Check the roof for missing or damaged shingles and flashing
  • Inspect the home’s siding for damaged areas, loose planks or siding. Seal up damaged areas.
  • Weatherstrip windows and doors to deter water from entering
  • Install a storm door
  • If your home has a sump pump, ensure that it is working properly
  • Remove, secure or cover outdoor furniture, grills, and equipment
  • Trim trees. Remove dead branches. Much of a storm’s damage comes from downed limbs or fallen trees.
  • Keep an emergency kit available with water (one gallon per person), snacks, batteries, flashlights, cell phone charger, and first aid supplies. Fill the car’s gas tank.
  • Have a family emergency plan for evacuation and subsequent connection with family, both local and out of town. Choose a place to meet in case of an emergency.
  • Consider purchasing a generator. Often, a windstorm will knock down power lines that may take hours or days to restore.
